Chest X-ray

Chest X-ray, or radiographic examination of the chest, is a fundamental diagnostic method used to examine and evaluate the condition of the lungs, heart, and structures in the chest. This simple and quick procedure provides valuable information for diagnosing various lung and heart conditions.

What is a Chest X-ray?

A chest X-ray is a radiographic image that shows the lungs, heart, blood vessels, airways, and bones of the chest. It allows doctors to see the internal structures of the chest and identify abnormalities such as infections, tumors, fluids, or injuries.

Why is it important?

  • Diagnosis of lung diseases: A chest X-ray is crucial for diagnosing conditions such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases.
  • Evaluation of heart problems: It helps identify heart problems, such as an enlarged heart or fluid around the heart.
  • Monitoring treatment: It is used to monitor the progress of treatment for respiratory and heart diseases.
  • Assessment of injuries: It is used to assess chest injuries, such as rib fractures or lung injuries.

How is it performed?

During the imaging process, the patient stands or sits in front of the X-ray machine. The technician positions the patient appropriately and may ask the patient to hold their breath for a few seconds while the image is taken. The procedure is quick and painless, and the images are often reviewed immediately.

Safety

Chest X-rays use a low dose of radiation and are considered a safe diagnostic procedure. Although radiation exposure is minimal, pregnant women should inform their doctor before undergoing the imaging to ensure additional precautions are taken.

When is it necessary?

  • When symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain appear
  • If an infection like pneumonia or tuberculosis is suspected
  • To assess the condition after chest injuries
  • As part of routine check-ups for monitoring chronic lung or heart conditions
