Dental teleradiography

Telexray, also known as a TR scan, is a type of X-ray imaging used in dentistry and orthodontics for the analysis of craniofacial structures. This technique allows for the assessment of the relationships between the teeth, jaws, and face, providing clinically significant information for diagnosis and orthodontic treatment planning.

What is teleradiography?

Telexray is a lateral (side) X-ray of the head that shows the facial bones, teeth, and surrounding structures in profile. This scan allows orthodontists to study the position and relationships between the upper and lower jaws, as well as the position of the teeth in relation to the rest of the craniofacial skeleton.

Why is it important?

  • Orthodontic Analysis: A TR scan is crucial for assessing orthodontic anomalies such as misalignments in the positions of the jaws and teeth. It helps create an accurate treatment plan for correcting bites and aligning teeth.
  • Growth Monitoring: Tele-X-ray imaging is used to monitor growth and development in children and adolescents, allowing orthodontists to predict and plan necessary interventions.
  • TMJ Dysfunction Assessment: It can aid in diagnosing problems with the temporomandibular joint, providing information on joint position and potential disorders.
  • Surgical Planning: TR recording is used as part of the preparation for orthognathic surgery, where precise assessment of the craniofacial structure is essential.

How is it performed?

During the scan, the patient stands or sits next to the X-ray machine, with their head positioned in a specific way. Teleradiography uses a head holder to ensure the patient’s head remains stable and in the correct position during the scan. The process is quick and painless, and the scan is used for detailed analysis in specialized software.

Safety

A TR scan uses a low dose of radiation, making it safe for patients of all ages. Protective equipment, such as lead aprons, is always used to further minimize radiation exposure.

When is it needed?

  • Before starting orthodontic treatment
  • To monitor the progress of orthodontic treatment
  • When planning orthognathic surgery
  • To assess temporomandibular dysfunction
